Surprise #1: real cowboys/-gals still exist.
Surprise#2: there is a thriving culture of cowboy poetry out there.
Surprise#3: it’s beautiful and relevant.
Last weekend I had the pleasure to present Anthem, a short movie at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. This piece was part of two exhibitions on contemporary cowboy culture I designed together with Gx instructor Carolina Trigo and Art Center students Betsy Tsai and Michael Relth in 2009. Breaking all the rules of cowboy poetry vernacular the movie (shot and produced by Jerry Dugan of FLF Films under my art direction) turned out to be quite successful raking up a couple important awards. Listen to the text – it still gives me goose bumps.
