For this week’s Unsung we will be heading south of the border to feature the work of Alejandro Magallanes. His posters have been seen in galleries and museums around the world. He helped to form different poster groups like: El Cartel de Medellin, La Corriente Electrica and Fuera de Registro who fight for peace and justice, for the Zapatistas and the Women of Juarez. I first saw Alejandro’s work in the book, Meggs’ History of Graphic Design. I was struck by his poster, “Reflexiones en torno al libro” (Reflections on the Book). In it he builds a face by combining a Basquait-like drawing with an open book for the mouth. He matches the energy of the face by surrounding it with what looks like Bodoni at different sizes and weights. Click to see more of Alejandro’s work
