It’s been a while since my last posting for Unsung, so here is my first one of the new year. Over Christmas break I checked out an exhibit at the Craft and Folk Art Museum about the posters of Californian Mexican farm workers. The United Farm Workers fought for the rights of migrant workers in the fields of California during the 1960’s and 70’s. They used the power of design to “educate and agitate” about the unfair wages and discrimination that Chicanos were facing. Different artists like the group The Chicano Royal Air Force made posters for the United Farm Workers. These designers used bold colors and dramatic compositions to get their message across. My favorite posters were Huelga and Portrait of La Causa.
