Chesley is a type instructor here at Art Center College of Design. After graduating top of his class from Art Center, he has gone on to work at a major Los Angeles branding firm and later to establish himself as a Freelance print and interactive designer here in LA.
He is known for being a disciple of Doyald Young and Leah Hoffmitz. With a keen eye for letterforms, great composition, and strong classical typography, he is very passionate and really cares for you to learn how to set type. He is willing to show you how to set up your InDesign files, and is not afraid to tell you when your design isn’t working. He’s a great professor, and knows what it feels like to be an Art Center student, so he tailors his class to our needs.

How long have you been teaching at Art Center?
I started teaching at Art Center fall 2007.
What classes do you teach?
I have taught Type 1, 2 and 3 classes. I have also taught the Design Fundamentals class (the equivalent of a Type 1 class) for Product, Transportation and Entertainment Design students.
Why should students take your class?
I have a great love and appreciation for beautiful and strong typographic choices in mine and my students work. I am the type of designer that will look at your typography, composition and color choices first. Concept is equally as important.
What’s your favorite part about teaching at Art Center?
The students at Art Center are a different breed from any of the other schools. They have a desire to learn and be the best at what they do. The projects are challenging, but the work is always impeccable. I’m also filled with joy when a student learns to see what I do. They understand how I think, how I see details, why I make the decisions that I do when working on a project.
