Moto magazine covers 1985-1986

Moto magazine covers 1985-1986

Our first spotlighted artist is designer Chaz Maviyane-Davis of Harare, Zimbabwe. Davis helped start the Maviyane Project in 1980 after  the end of the guerrilla war for Zimbabwe independence. The Maviyane Project aimed to create a new graphic language that would not only serve the communication needs of a new modernized society, but which would also be relevant to the black community, respecting the strong indigenous visual culture present mainly in their traditional arts and crafts. The cover images are from Moto magazine. ‘Moto’ means ‘fire’ in Shona, one of two major Zimbabwean languages, and was a monthly magazine covering political issues affecting the country at a fundamental level.
